Hermes Birkin bags are nowadays among the most sought fashion items. This is due to their limited editions, their unique materials, their distinctive shape and the amount of time and skills required to create each of them.

Hermès origin

Thierry Hermès started his legacy in 1837 at a warehouse of harnesses and saddles in Paris –this fact actually explains its famous logo– and ended up being one of the most luxurious brands in the history of fashion by selling leather goods, prêt-à-porter, accessories, perfumes and jewellery.

There was a need

The iconic Birkin bag owes its name to the English actress Jane Birkin, who lived in France during her career, and starred movies like Blow Up and Wonderwall. The history behind the bag is a curious one: once upon a time (in 1981) Jane Birkin happened to meet by change Jean-Louis Dumas –chief executive of Hermès by that time.

They were in a plane about to take off and he was impressed by the straw bag she was carrying because it could not hold properly her belongings and all of them fell down when she was trying to fit it in the overhead compartment. Mr. Dumas asked her why she was using that bag for travelling and so she complained about the fact that nicer bags were always too small. That inspired Mr. Dumas. He thought she could be right and not the only woman thinking this way so he proposed her to design together her ideal bag.

Jane Birkin and Jean-Louis Dumas worked together for some months and the Birkin bag was born:

And as you may have guessed this is a happy-ending story: Jane adored the new and convenient bag and carried plenty of them so became so popular. Women liked the deep and study design of the rectangular bag, with a variety of sizes and shoulder styles.
