How to Set the Right Target?

Be clear about your goals.

Suppose your goal is to lose weight. Instead of saying “I will do more sports now” or “I will eat healthier now”, setting clear goals will eliminate uncertainty. Specific goals are easier to achieve than others. If you consult a dietitian to set a specific dietary programme for yourself, or to determine what you will eat day by day, you will set a clearer goal. The same applies to sport. Instead of saying that you will do sports three days a week, making Monday, Wednesday and Friday sports days will make you more committed to the plan and reach the goal more easily.

Make sure you are in the right gear.

Setting goals that are too far and challenging and not reaching them can always take you back to where you started and even further back. On the other hand, setting goals that are too easy can feel like moving forward in your life without making any effort; it does not arouse any desire. Just as driving a car fast in low gear or slow in high gear damages the engine, the same applies to your goal. If you really want to develop and progress, put it in the right gear; goals that are sustainable, achievable with effort, but also take you out of your comfort zone are the right path to success.

Choose goals you care about.

If your goal is not important enough for you, your chances of achieving it are very low as you will lose your enthusiasm after a while. When setting a goal, think about why it is important to you and what will change in your life if you achieve it; write it down. Do you set your goals yourself or is it a path forced upon you by others? Make sure you know if you really want it or if it is just a whim for you.

Be realistic.

The further your goal is from reality, the more difficult it is to achieve. When you do not reach your goal, it is also very likely that you will feel like a failure and give up on your goal. You can break your goals into pieces on your way to success. It is very important to strike that balance between discipline and compassion when setting your goals. While being kind to yourself, you should also keep your standard high. Getting caught up in the energy of the moment and setting goals that you can only sustain for a week can cause you to go backwards in terms of motivation.

Remember your strengths.

After following all these steps and setting your goal, think about your strengths. Sometimes, no matter how much you give up, you have strengths that separate you from others and show you who you are. No matter how hard you struggle, these strengths are some supporters that will keep you standing for the goal after that point. If you have difficulty in finding these strengths, do not hesitate to consult your family and friends. What are their favourite things about you? Maybe there is something about you that you have never even realised that makes people have a positive impression on you. After identifying your strengths, think about how you can use these strengths to achieve your goal. Keeping a notebook or diary during this process will be useful both to see concretely how far you have come and to keep your motivation alive.
