Is Keratin really worth it?

I remember very well when I decided to treat my hair with keratin. This decision was not difficult for me to take as all I wanted was to have a shiny, straight and healthy hair. So keratin was the only solution that is available for me.

Two years ago, I decided finally to treat my frizzy hair with keratin. My hair was unmanageable, curly and very dry. I used always to treat it with special masks, oils and leave in creams to give it a healthier look and to manage and take care of all the beautiful and bouncy curls I had.

My hair was treated twice with keratin. It looked healthy and shiny at first but after several months, my hair was damaged! It became drier than ever… the treatment that should last for at least six months, lasted for only five days, leaving my hair dry, weak, often greasy but with less volume.

I thought that keratin was my only solution but in fact it wasn’t as it damaged my hair. In this article, I will not only share my experience with this treatment but I will list its disadvantages.

Hair loss

Before treating my hair with keratin, I was experiencing hair loss in little quantities. But after treating it with keratin, almost half of my hair fell out! It fell out a lot especially when brushing or styling it.

You may think that the hair loss I was experiencing has nothing to do with the keratin treatment but in fact it does. Hair loss is a common symptom among women who treat their hair with keratin as the process itself weakens the hair follicle causing it to fall out easier.

Hair dryness

All what I wanted after treating my hair with keratin is to have shinier and smoother hair. But all what I got was dryer hair! I noticed that especially after using hair dryers and hair straightners.

Keratin treatment damaged my scalp and caused the loss of beneficial oils that help the hair to stay healthier.

Greasy hair

While my hair was treated with keratin, I had dandruff and my hair became greasier. Yes my scalp was dry but sometimes it became greasy as it is now straight. After two years of getting this treatment, I am still experiencing greasiness and dandruff even though my hair returned to its normal type: curly.
