Four Things You Learn When You Live Alone

live alone

Hello, everyone. I’m Asu, and I will turn 20 this year. I have started to live away from my parents, now it has been a year. The first time I was this far away from my hometown was when I was 19 years old. At this young age, the fact that I was living just by myself had taught me a lot, I think. I would like to talk about the top four things that I’ve learned by living alone.

1 – You are capable of more than you think.

The first time I tried to use the washing machine, I just wanted to cry. Back at home, I wasn’t much used to wash my clothes, and the first time I used it, I felt like this was a really hard thing to do that I wasn’t capable of. It might seem like a small act for some people, but it was a huge thing to accomplish, for me. By living myself, I’ve understood that I am capable of doing my own work, by not needing any other people.

2 – You start to prioritize yourself more.

When you are living alone, I guess the part which is going the change most is your mental health I guess, rather that your academic life or physical health. When you are trying to adapt yourself to a new city, you start to build a new life for yourself. You meet new people, you start to build new friendships. You get into new relationships. Everything is new, which is the best opportunity for a human being to develop themselves. Although this newness might scare you at first, when you get used to it, you enjoy that feeling, it is like jumping into the sea; it might feel cold at first but when you get used to it, you don’t want to get out of the sea.

3 – You start to build a healthier relationship with yourself.

The most important relationship that you have is the one with yourself. By standing alone on your feet, you start to prioritize yourself more. You start to give yourself the love that you deserve, by understand that you don’t need any other person’s love, when you are alone. When you love yourself, every bad occasion in your life seems to look a lot more smaller, and you start to trust yourself more, in the way which you are going to be more self-confident.

4 – You start to enjoy the small things more.

This is something that I’ve just discovered in myself. Before, everything seemed to be moving too fast for me. Life was chaotic and I felt like every thing is just being consumed in a fast way. But now, I feel like I have got my joy back. The smallest things in life enjoy me a lot more than they were used to be. For example, drinking a coffee with a friend in the campus, between two classes became a joyful activity, not only an activity to wait until the next class. Or a small talk with your friend in another country became a small joyful activity to escape the chaos in the daily life. By living yourself, you learn to enjoy those little things in life, a lot more.

Those were the top four things that I’ve learned by living myself. This year has been a rough year for me, as I was trying to adapt myself to a new city, but I survived it well. In life, new things might seem scary, but actually they’re the ones by which you’re going to develop yourself more. I even remember calling my friends, saying that I will return back to my hometown. But life is like that, you can adapt yourself and embrace your reality, you can accomplish anything if you want to. When you taste the great energy you got by living alone, you understand that there is just yourself that you need in this life to move on & be successful.
